Q: When did you start thinking about the possibility of owning your own business?
I have a background in quality improvement and performance management. I?m also a realtor so I?ve always been attracted to business. Our current center director approached me 4 years ago with the opportunity, but the timing just wasn?t right. When my daughter was getting ready to have her first child, we began searching for childcare centers. We realized that what we were looking for was just not available. So I decided to be apart of the change that I thought was necessary for our local community.
Q: What has been the single best thing about owning your own business?
Definitely the interaction and smiles that I?ve been able to get everyday. But I also think it?s the autonomy of being in business for myself and having the ability to develop different programs that will benefit the children in my community. Things like that are really important to us.
This has been a choice my husband and I made together to start our own business. I think we couldn?t have made a better lifetime decision.
Q: It sounds like owning your own business is something that you?re really meant to do.
Absolutely. I was at my mom?s 65th birthday party and one of her friends approached me and said, ?I?ve always picked you as one of those people that just knows what they want to do and where they?re going.?

MANILA, Philippines - Supermarket chain Puregold Price Club Inc. is set to acquire upscale retailer S&R Membership Shopping through a P16.5 billion share swap.
A merger will allow the 2 retail firms, which are both controlled by businessman Lucio Co, to address all income segments: Puregold is a supermarket is aimed at the low-and-middle-income market, while S&R, modeled after the warehouse membership shopping chains in the United States, targets the upper middle class market. ?
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Wednesday, March 28, Puregold, the country's second largest retailer, said it will issue 766.41 million common shares at P21.50 apiece to acquire 100% of Kareila Management Corp., the operator of S&R.
The share swap will be for a ratio of 450 Puregold share for every one Kareila share.
Upon completion of the transaction, the Co family will own approximately 77% of outstanding shares in Puregold. ?
The transaction will be presented to stockholders for approval in its annual meeting on May 8.
The Puregold-S&R merger talks started in February.
"With both the [Puregold] and S&R stores, the company will have a complete offering of hypermarkets, supermarkets, discount stores and now membership clubs, and will cover the entire spectrum of consumers in the Philippines," the listed company said.
"In addition, [Puregold] believes that the acquisition will be earnings accretive in the coming years,? it added.
S&R?s total revenues hit 6.6 billion in 2011, an improvement of 61 percent from the prior year?s P4.1 billion, driven by the full year operations of the new store in Cebu as well as same store sales growth of about 39 percent. It posted a net income of P660 million.
At end-2011, S&R had approximately 214,746 paying members across its 6 stores located in Bonifacio Global City; Quezon City; Alabang; Aseana Business Park, Paranaque; Cebu and Pampanga.

Richard (RJ) Eskow: The Court and the Mandate: Let the 'Left' Be Left Again
The world's been turned upside down by the Supreme Court hearings on the individual insurance mandate. Left is right, right is wrong, and the future is uncertain. There are only two approaches to health care that we know are constitutional: a European-style 'socialized medicine' system, or the old system of uninsured people dying in the streets.
Backwards
Conservatives are viciously attacking an idea developed in right-wing think tanks like the Heritage Foundation as an alternative to Clinton health reform. That means that, by their own framing, the right is now fighting for the "freeloaders" who don't "take responsibility" for their health costs. That's what you get when a Democratic President tries to compromise with the Right - Republicans attacking one of their own ideas as "socialism."
It's just as off-kilter on the other side of the aisle. Democrats and some of their liberal supporters are vehemently defending a law that forces Americans to buy insurance from private insurance companies - companies whose hikes of as much as 24 percent were just ruled "excessive" in nine states - for coverage so weak that enrollees can still be driven into bankruptcy by medical expenses.
The "left" solution involves forcing people to pay inflated premiums to private corporations, while the "right" is rejecting its own proposal. Who's on first?
Letting 'Left' Be Left
There's a simple solution, however - one that lets Democrats return to their party's traditional values. Remember, none of the Democratic Party's great accomplishments relied on for-profit corporations. Social Security didn't force people to buy retirement packages from Wall Street banks, and Medicare wasn't created by mandating that old people pay large premiums to for-profit carriers.
Great Democrats of the past understood that government does some things better than the private sector. The Democratic Party can get out in front of this Supreme Court fight the old-fashioned way: by being Democrats.
Robert Reich has pointed out that Democrats could perform a kind of "health-care jujitsu" by saying that the only legal option that's left is Medicare-For-All. That's one approach. Another would be to keep everything in the Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act that limits health premium and restricts health insurance companies' ability to reject people for pre-existing conditions - but without the mandate.
Whose Problem?
But wait, some health economists will say. That will make insurance unaffordable, because healthy people won't sign up for health insurance and insurance companies will be left with a costlier pool of enrollees. It will be almost impossible for insurers to make a profit. To which the proper response is: Whose problem is that?
If insurance companies can't make a buck that way, let them lobby for an individual mandate, instead of giving them what they want for free as the current bill does. Or let them step aside and admit they can't do the job.
That would put Democrats on the popular side of this issue once again - fighting for the people against the insurance companies, instead of the other way around. It would re-open the debate and open the door to much better approaches - from a public option all the way to Medicare For All.
Where Left Went Wrong (or "Right")
The world would make sense again. Right would be Right and Left would be Left - something we haven't on this issue since Hillary Clinton and John Edwards introduced mandates into the Democratic primaries of 2008 by employing the right-wing frame of "individual responsibility." Back then, too many self-described liberals cheered them for it and attacked Obama for initially resisting it. Without that primary debate we might not be in this mess today.
Back then we tried pointing out that the Clinton/Edwards/Heritage Foundation approach would not provide "universal coverage" and was un-progressive (see also, "How Progressive Groupthink Hindered Health Reform"), that RomneyCare in Massachusetts was not working as well as advertised, and that the individual mandate would be onerous for middle-class families without some sort of public alternative.
Those who said that Romneycare's alleged popularity in Massachusetts proved that mandates were a political winner weren't diving deeply enough into the polling data. The loss of Ted Kennedy's Senate seat was due partly to those who opposed the health care law and partly to those who felt it didn't go far enough - especially by encouraging a more Medicare-like approach for everyone.
Those were the political warning signs of things to come.
A Second Chance
But this bill's Republican opponents have given Democrats another chance. The White House shouldn't wait for the Supreme Court's decision. It should take a public position immediately, saying that individual mandates were only offered to appease the right and that it's willing to remove them immediately.
It would be seen as a sign of strength if the President announced that, no matter what the Supreme Court decides, he intends to make sure that health insurance companies don't get a free ride in this country. Mandate or no mandate, he expects them to hold their premiums down or be investigated by all appropriate government agencies. And he should add that, mandate or no mandate, the days when people could be refused coverage for pre-existing conditions are gone and will never come back.
If he does that, he won't have to fight for his bill. The corporate political lobby will pull whatever strings are necessary to protect his law. And if they don't he'll have the opportunity to fight on the populist side of this issue, rather than defending for-profit corporations in an election year.
In the end the health insurers will fail anyway. They've proven they can't offer real health coverage at an affordable price. This would put the Left on the right side - of history. There would be a side benefit, too: When it comes to health care, liberals will be able to act like liberals again and Democrats could return to their party's traditions - and its strengths.

Weekend smoking can damage your memory, study suggests
ScienceDaily (Mar. 6, 2012) ? People who smoke only at weekends cause as much damage to their memory as those who smoke on a daily basis, according to research from Northumbria University.
Academics from the Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group in Northumbria?s School of Life Sciences tested 28 social smokers ? those who smoke around 20 cigarettes once or twice a week, typically when out at the weekend ? 28 people who smoke 10-15 cigarettes daily and 28 people who had never smoked on a video-based prospective memory test.
Participants were asked to remember a series of pre-determined actions at specific locations when viewing a short clip of a busy high street. For example, they were asked to remember to text a friend when passing a particular store.
In the first study of its kind, researchers found that both groups of smokers performed worse than those who had never smoked, with no difference according to the pattern of smoking.
Dr Tom Heffernan, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, who conducted the research with Dr Terence O?Neill, said: ?Smoking-related memory decline in general has been linked with increases in accelerated cerebral degeneration such as brain shrinkage.
?This new research suggests that restricting smoking to weekends makes no difference ? smoking damages your memory.?
The study has been published in the Open Addiction journal.

Ocean acidification worst in 300 million years, study finds (+video)
Researchers at Columbia University have found that carbon dioxide emissions have lowered the pH at a rate unparalleled in at least the last 300 million years of our planet's history.
The oceans are becoming more acidic faster than they have in the past 300 million years, a period that includes four mass extinctions, researchers have found.
Skip to next paragraphThen, as is happening now, increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere warmed the planet and made the oceans more acidic. These changes are associated with major shifts in climate and mass extinctions.
But while past increases in the atmosphere's carbon dioxide levels resulted from volcanoes and other natural causes, today that spike is due to human activities, the scientists note.
"What we're doing today really stands out," lead researcher B?rbel H?nisch, a paleoceanographer at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said in a news release. "We know that life during past ocean acidification events was not wiped out ? new species evolved to replace those that died off. But if industrial carbon emissions continue at the current pace, we may lose organisms we care about ? coral reefs, oysters, salmon." [Humans Causing 6th Mass Extinction]
As the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases, oceans absorb that carbon dioxide, which turns into a carbon acid. As a result the pH ? a measure of acidity ? drops, meaning the water has become more acidic. This dissolves the carbonates?needed by some organisms, like corals, oysters or the tiny snails salmon eat.
In their review, published Thursday (March 1) in the journal Science, H?nisch and colleagues found the closest modern parallel about 56 millions ago in what is called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, when atmospheric carbon concentrations doubled, pushing up global temperatures. Extinctions in the deep sea accompanied this shift. (The PETM occurred about 9 million years after the dinosaurs went extinct.)
But, now, the ocean is acidifying at least 10 times faster than it did 56 million years ago, according to H?nisch.
Ocean acidification may also have occurred when volcanoes pumped massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the air 252 million years ago, at the end of the Permian period, and 201 million years ago, at the end of the Triassic period, they found. Both are associated with mass extinctions.
"The current rate of (mainly fossil fuel)?carbon dioxide release?stands out as capable of driving a combination and magnitude of ocean geochemical changes potentially unparalleled in at least the last 300 million years of Earth history, raising the possibility that we are entering an unknown territory of marine ecosystem change," the researchers conclude in their paper.

BEIJING (AP) ? Two-thirds of China's cities currently fail to meet stricter air quality standards that the government wants to phase in over four years to combat notoriously smoggy skies, a senior Chinese environmental official said Friday.
The State Council, China's Cabinet, on Wednesday issued new limits on pollutants to go into effect nationwide by 2016. It also said major cities must launch programs this year to regularly monitor additional kinds of pollutants for the first time, including fine particles associated with health problems.
Vice Minister of Environmental Protection Wu Xiaoqing said Friday that the government estimates that two-thirds of Chinese cities currently do not meet the new standards, saying efforts to improve urban air quality will be "very hard work."
"Our task of air pollution control is huge," Wu said.
The government revised its air quality standards in response to public pressure over pollution and the lack of thorough information about air quality in China. Demands in Beijing for greater government accountability on air quality were fueled in recent months in part by a Twitter feed set up by the U.S. Embassy giving hourly updates on air quality as measured on the facility's roof.
Wu said the government plans to set up 1,500 new air monitoring stations around the country.
"We also want to build up public confidence in the data we provide in order to better serve the public," Wu said.
The new Chinese standards require concentrations of fine particulate matter called PM2.5 to be kept below daily averages of 75 micrograms per cubic meter ? more than twice as lenient as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's standard of 35 micrograms.
Some Chinese cities generally have much higher amounts than that, and the U.S. Embassy monitoring showed a 24-hour average in the capital Friday of 188.5, a reading that it called "very unhealthy."
PM2.5 ? particles less than 2.5 micrometers in size, or about 1/30th the width of an average human hair ? are believed to be a health risk because they can lodge deeply in the lungs, and have been linked to increased cardiovascular and respiratory diseases as well as lung cancer.

Foster homes offer pets second chances | Mad Turks
VINELAND ? Some homeless animals need a little extra tender loving care before they?re perceived as perfect for adoption.
When animals that arrive at the local shelter are aging, hurt, sick or even pregnant, the Cumberland County SPCA lines up a foster home to take them in, care for them and sometimes nurse them back to good health, said Maria Stoerrle, the organization?s foster care coordinator.
Newborns and young animals are suited well for foster life, where they can learn to socialize with people and other animals while being trained. Senior pets aren?t adopted as quickly as younger animals, and the shelter staff doesn?t like seeing them sit in cages for long periods of time. And it?s a priority to get the injured or sick pets in a home to ensure a better recovery.
The nearly 100 families who open their homes to the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals? foster program help the North Delsea Drive shelter maximize the number of pets it can place in permanent settings.
?For many animals that go into foster care, the foster homes are literally saving their life,? Stoerrle said. ?There?s just a huge difference between a cage and a home for some of them. It does become kind of like a shelter outside a shelter.?
Sometimes animals move to a foster home due to emergency situations. A fire at the SPCA facility in December had shelter staff relying on a foster home to care for three birds they felt would be affected by fumes if moved back into the building too soon.
The shelter also made good use of its foster families when a puppy mill raid brought several new dogs to its doors.
Stoerrle said she?s amazed constantly with how much the foster families are willing to help.
?The animals sometimes are sick, they smell, they?re dirty and they take them,? she said. ?They just take them and keep saving them. It?s amazing.?
George Edgar Joyce III joined the foster care program two years ago, after a visit to the shelter showed him just how many animals need homes.

A closer look at 'Men's Health' | Men Health Wizard

?It?s surreal!? That?s a popular catch-phrase which in my mind vastly over-used today. It?s kind of like yesterday?s ?My bad!? or ?It is what it is?. I still get sick of hearing both of those.
The Merriman-Webster definition of surreal is- ?marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream; unbelievable, fantastic?
Those last two alternatives are more recognizable to me but less romantic to the user of the term.
Everyone knows that ?It?s surreal? is actually a response by the Italian jeweler when a customer asked him if the diamond was a fake.
Anyway, I was going through our newspaper rack trying to reduce it?s height to three feet or less. Several past issues of my ?Men?s Health? magazines were taking up a lot of space.
I am usually good about taking care of our newspapers. We get three dailies and of course one weekly which happens to be the one you are reading now. I only subscribe to the latter one because of the pictures. On a daily basis I put all newspapers in the recycle box. We ultimately use them for weed control in our gardens since we don?t have a canary.
But magazines are a different story. I can?t seem to find enough time to read all the articles in many of them so I set them aside for ?future reading time.?
So there I was the other day sorting through the pile.
In looking at each issue I was amazed to see how this particular magazine has changed so much since I first subscribed to it. That was back about seven or eight years ago when we were visiting my younger brother, Tom, who lives in Illinois. I noticed a copy of this magazine on his coffee table and thumbed through it.
Now, being of sound body and mind (somewhat sound on both counts although more on the first) I thought this would be a perfect magazine to help me to stay fit. So I have been reading it ever since whenever I had the time. Lately, it seems I haven?t had the time
Each cover of the magazine includes the subtitle: ?Tons of useful stuff.? And I have found that some of these articles are very real as opposed to surreal!
I can?t really remember when or whether the magazine changed its format. But recently I have noticed far too many large photos of men and women in various stages of undress. I know the old saying: ?Sex sells? but knowing that Maria periodically reads my articles I can truthfully say that I am not in the market to buy it.
Believe it or not, I subscribe to this magazine for the articles.
The earliest ones I found in my rack dated back to November 2010. And wouldn?t you know it, there?s an article entitled ?How to Remember Anything.?
I had to fight through all of the undersized pages of ads that have no page numbers to get to page 96. And when I finally did I was disappointed to see that the article was on how to remember a phone number.
It listed six steps with a sentence or two explaining each step. It was hardly what I would consider an in depth article. I guess it caters more to the men with short attention spans.
I myself have developed a one-step approach. Maria is great at remembering phone numbers. So I usually ask her if I need one.
Some other articles in this issue were, ?Nurse Your Nose- sniffing out sinus problems with tips from the snot docs,? and ?Mending Your Broken Heart ? she left- take two of these and don?t call her in the morning.?
(It?s not what you think- it?s just Tylenol.)
The one that really caught my eye was ?Your Complete 15 Minute Mind/Body Plan.? But I couldn?t find it in the index of article titles. That would have meant that I would have to thumb through each page just to find it.
I have a theory that if it takes longer to find the article than the actual plan, I won?t waste my time looking for it, despite the seductive pictures between articles.
One thing that I noticed when examining the magazine?s contents was that it is divided into five main sections; Fitness, Nutrition, Guy Knowledge, Health and ?Sex Relationships?. In case the eyes of some of you men out there perked up with that last category- feast those eyes on these select articles, ?The Bare Truth,? ?Ask The Girl Next Door? and ?Look Great On Any Date.? I?ll leave it up to you to guess the content of those articles. I for one didn?t even bat an eyelash at any of them, especially the first one.
So I placed that issue on my pile of recyclables.
The next issue had a picture of actor Mark Wahlberg. He?s become quite a star in some recent blockbuster movies, all the titles of which escape my memory. I do remember him when he was first breaking into the motion picture scene. He starred along with Burt Reynolds in a film called ?Boogey Nights?. This ?skin flick? was a truly graphic depiction as well as a satirical look at the pornographic movie industry. I have to tell you that it was disgusting and repulsive- every time that I watched it. And I am certain that any of you men who watched it numerous times would agree.
Anyway Wahlberg appeared on the cover of the December, 2010 issue with the following quite under his picture- ?I want to build something that can last forever.?
Once again, after thumbing through seven pages of glamorous advertisements I got to the initial index of articles. Included on this list were ?The Sinister Slice?- about cheap pizza, ?Trigger Her Sex Drive- but first, how is your hard drive??, ?Six Pack Abs ?a regular featured article it seems, and, finally- ?Strip Away Stress?- Wahlberg?s Theory of Evolution. It was much more boring than Boogie Nights I might add.
Some other articles included ?A Nutty Idea- crack down on your cholesterol,? ?Big Arms, Mighty Chest: a dumbbell-only plan to maximize muscle gain? and ?Keep Lust Alive.? Boogie Nights rearing its ugly head again I suspect.
Another issue added to the pile.
Five subsequent issues contained the same healthy and sultry articles. You know- ?Gym Free Abs- carving a strong core,? ?Are You a Lousy Kisser- unleash her passions with these lip-locking lessons? and ?How To Carve A Pumpkin.? I didn?t even waste my time looking for that one.
One issue had a commonly used attention-grabber which included two covers, one on the front and one on the back, each upside down. The articles in each section are also?upside down until they meet in the middle.
I find that so annoying. If I am going to sit down and read a magazine, albeit for it article contents alone, I don?t want to have to turn it upside down when I get to the middle.
By the way I am told there is one magazine you may want to turn sideways when you get to the middle but that has nothing to do with men?s health, I think.
All of these issues were referred to the recycle pile.
The final one included many of the mandatory ?Lose Your Gut? articles. One that really caught my eye was the ?Supermarket Survival Guide? that includes 10 rules of shopping.
The one that we try to follow is to shop the rainbow. As a result of a study of the nutritional values of food versus cost, the author of the article recommends that we buy purple cabbage, black dry beans, orange butternut squash, green spinach and yellow bananas. These are all good foods from our perspective as well.
So I finally succeeded in thinning out our newspaper (magazine) rack at least for a couple of months or so. That will keep Maria happy and the cleaning lady as well. They both won?t have to pick up the pile every time it falls over.
By the way, I didn?t even know that Merriman and Webster were a couple, did you?

Anti-Putin activists pay high price but won't back down

Harvard University student and anti-Putin activist Maria Gaidar, 29, previously served as vice governor of the Kirov region. She will help manage a crowdsourced website that monitors polling stations across Russia this weekend.

Maria Gaidar?knows first?hand about the consequences of?being a political activist in Russia.
A fierce critic of Vladimir Putin and founder of the youth opposition movement DA! (YES! in Russian and and acronym for Democratic Alternative), Gaidar was accused by pro-government media last year of fleeing the country after being involved in a car crash that killed a 13-year-old girl.?
?I didn?t hit a girl,? the 29-year-old Harvard University student told msnbc.com.
Gaidar says she has also been detained after taking part in a peaceful dissenters? march, but she refuses to back down. Gaidar remains a leader of anti-Putin organization The Other Russia as well as?the opposition Union of Right Forces party.

But despite huge protests amid claims for fraud in the wake of December?s parliamentary elections, Gaidar is among the many Russians with?little doubt that Putin will be re-elected as president when the country goes to the polls on Sunday. And while the?message of tens of thousands who attended rallies in Moscow quickly went from one in favor of fair elections to a straightforward "Putin, go!", the?country?s opposition movement has failed to put forward an alternative leader. It also hasn?t coalesced behind one of the four candidates running against him.

Gaidar?credits?prominent blogger Alexei Navalny for putting forward an important idea when he encouraged people to go to the polls and vote for anyone but Putin.

?The message is ?we don?t want this anymore? and the way to transmit this is by not voting for Putin,? Gaidar told msnbc.com.
However, that is unlikely to be enough to drive Putin from office.
Being?an ocean?and several time zones away won't stop Gaidar from doing to her part to try to ensure a fair vote this weekend.
Irregularities?
Gaidar?will help manage a crowdsourced website that monitors polling stations across Russia. She said several thousand?people?have already signed up as monitors and she suspects irregularities will keep them busy on Sunday.
?Monitoring elections is the right thing to do,? she added. ?[Putin] doesn?t have more than 50 percent of support.?
Gaidar says the opposition movement has so far focused on establishing fair elections, not finding leaders. Those who are the best opposition leaders are not always the best leaders of a country, she said, hinting at lessons learned following the Orange Revolution in Ukraine and the Rose Revolution in Georgia.
Russia's presidential election takes place on Sunday, Mar. 4. Rock Center Correspondent Harry Smith journeyed to Moscow where he met blogger Alexei Navalny, a vocal opponent of Vladimir Putin and his party United Russia. Navalny has galvanized protesters through social media and uses his website to expose alleged political corruption. The prospect of Putin returning to the presidency has generated protests in Russia not seen since the fall of Communism. The surging public outrage has left some wondering if a movement is afoot in Russia similar to that of last year's Arab Spring.?
?Right now the protest is very healthy,??said Gaidar, who is the daughter of former Russian prime minister Yegor Gaidar.
?This revolution is Russian and pragmatic. People understand what they want and they?re asking for it.?
'Party of crooks and thieves'
Among those leading the charge toward reform is Navalny, a 35-year-old lawyer and blogger who thrives on exposing corruption and often targets Putin?s United Russia party. He calls it ?the party of crooks and thieves.?
Following December?s elections, Navalny and other activists took to the Web to post reports of the alleged abuses, sparking even more outrage. On the second day of rallies, Navalny was arrested on charges of obstructing traffic after giving a speech in front of thousands of protesters. He was sentenced to 15 days in jail.
?I think that corruption has been a constant irritant which kept on building along with resentment,? Navalny told NBC News' Harry Smith. ?Putin?s mistake is that he engineered an electoral fraud in the city of Moscow so obvious and arrogant that it was taken by the people as a slap in the face.?
While Navalny was in jail, the rallies grew even larger. "Of course, we were very upset that we could not be there,? Navalny said. ?But we could not believe that such things were really taking place in Moscow.?

Navalny was released on Dec. 21, and an even bigger protest followed on Christmas Eve.
?At the demonstration I said that right now we can go and take the Kremlin, which frightened many people. But it was true,? Navalny told Smith.
A laid-back Yankee in trouble in Putin's court
The activist said the government ?did everything to make sure we did not exist.? He told Smith there is a car that always follows him around, and another that follows his wife.
?And it's very funny because they are changing plates on the cars but they are not changing cars,? he explained.
But Putin?s press secretary downplayed Navalny?s importance.
?[Putin] wouldn't over exaggerate his importance,? Dmitry Peskov told Smith.
If?Putin wins on Sunday, he?could run for another six-year term in 2018. A victory then would mean Putin had chalked up 24 years in power out of the 33 years since the collapse of Communism.
Generous social spending
While the anti-Putin movement is unlikely to change the results of this election, experts agree the protests have eroded Putin?s legitimacy.
Over the past decade, Putin benefited from a high approval rating, an economy that performed relatively well and an apolitical public that he kept under control through generous social spending.
?All three of those things are gone and not likely to return,? Timothy Frye, director of Columbia University?s Harriman Institute, told msnbc.com.
While the opposition has grown in recent months, ?Putin continues to do well in the countryside, among older voters, the empowered bureaucracy and people who are dependent on the state for their livelihood, but he has lost the support of the middle class and the urban population fed up with the endemic corruption. At the same time, his campaign strategy has been to appeal to the core rather than court the opposition.
?If there is no rigging, he would probably win half of the vote anyway,? Maria Lipman, an expert at the Carnegie Endowment Moscow Center, told msnbc.com.
Russians rally for Putin -- and 2 days off work
Navalny has said he would participate in the political process if elections were open to anyone who wants to run.
Gaidar, who is currently pursuing a mid-career masters degree?in public administration at Harvard and who?previously served?as deputy governor of the Kirov region, says she doesn?t have any political ambitions. Being a politician in nowadays Russia is like hitting your head against a wall, she said.
But Gaidar does plan to return home after she completes her studies and try to enable change within the system.
?In five to 10 years we?re going to live in a different Russia,? she said.?
