US home prices accelerate in November

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. home prices accelerated in November compared with a year ago, pushed higher by rising sales and a tighter supply of available homes.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index rose 5.5 percent in November compared with the same month a year ago. That's the largest year-over-year gain in six years.

All but one of the cities in the index posted annual gains. The largest gains was in Phoenix, where prices jumped nearly 23 percent. It was followed by San Francisco, where prices rose 12.7 percent, and Detroit, where prices increased 11.9 percent.

Prices also rose in half of the cities measured by the index in November from October. That's up from seven in October. The biggest monthly gains were in San Francisco, Phoenix and Minneapolis.

Monthly prices are not seasonally adjusted and frequently decline over the winter. The 20-city index dipped in November from the previous month.

Steady price increases should help fuel the housing recovery. They encourage more people to buy before prices rise further. Higher prices also build homeowners' wealth, which can spur more spending and economic growth.

"Housing is clearly recovering," David M. Blitzer, chairman of the Case-Shiller index, who noted that prices are rising for both new and previously occupied homes.

Purchases of previously occupied homes rose last year to their highest level in five years. The National Association of Realtors forecasts that sales will rise 9 percent this year. Independent economists have similar forecasts.

Sales of new homes also rose in 2012, although they remain near depressed levels.

Stable job gains and record-low mortgage rates have encouraged more people to buy homes. And the limited inventory of homes for sale has made builders more confident to step up construction. The number of previously occupied homes has fallen to an 11-year low.

Millions of homeowners still owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth, making it difficult for them to sell. But higher home values are lowering the numbers of those "under water" and should encourage more homeowners to sell.

More people are also moving out on their own after living with friends and relatives in the recession. That's driving a big gain in apartment construction and also pushing up rents. That's also encouraging investors to buy homes and rent them.

The tighter supply of homes pushed builders in December to start work on the most homes in 4 ? years. Last year was the best year for residential construction 2008, just after the recession started.

50 Amazing Fat Loss and Fitness Tips From a Pro Trainer | Burn The ...

Vancouver personal trainer Mike Howard joins the Burn the Fat guest blogger roster this month with 50 amazing fat loss and fitness tips to help you have an amazing year. Like a lot of professional trainers, Mike is passionate about his craft, so he?s always thinking about exercise and nutrition. He?s also keenly aware of how valuable our time is. So, as he was sitting in the airport waiting for a delayed flight to arrive, he decided to use the time productively, he opened up his laptop and just started writing his first post for Burn the Fat Blog. He brainstormed his best fat loss and fitness tips, and for a list that he told me was ?random,? this is some amazingly insightful advice. If you apply just a handful of these tips, there?s no doubt, you?ll get better and faster results with much less stress.

50 Fat Loss And Fitness Tips, By Mike Howard

1. Slow down? enjoy, savor and nurture the process of preparing and eating food.

2. Do some form of squat or deadlift variation at least 3x/week.

3. Move often? move with intent.

4. Nail the basics? Don?t get wrapped up in the minutiae. Success is about mastering fundamentals.

5. Self-talk is powerful. Use ?I choose/choose not to? rather than ?I have to/can?t?. This is the genesis of personal accountability and sustainable health.

6. All diets work (or fail): What ?works? is consistent adherence. Find an eating pattern that is nutrient-dense and that gets you into an energy deficit.

7. You don?t need to ?cleanse? or ?detox?? EVER. Your organs do a wonderful job of that.

8. Eating 6x per day can work well? so can eating only 3x per day. Customize your meal frequency to suit your lifestyle.

9. ?Bodybuilding? can be (and often is) ?functional?. What most people perceive as ?functional? training is in comparison pretty useless.

10. Have only 10 minutes for a workout? Spend 2-3 minutes on mobility/warm-up then jump into a metabolic circuit. Pick 2-6 exercises multi-joint exercises and repeat ? little-to-no rest.

11. Yoga and Pilates can be effective but if your goal is fat loss or performance-based ? they should be ?extra?s? when you?ve done your strength/metabolic/cardio work.

12. Fat loss simplified: Get in a deficit and get adequate protein ? the rest is details.

13. Foam rollers, muscle rollers and other myofascial release tools are your friends. Make them part of every workout.

14. Your thoughts and your environment shape your behavior. Nurture them and use them to your advantage.

15. There is a fine line between open-mindedness and gullibility. Be skeptically open-minded but not so much that your brain falls out.

16. Have an exercise and nutrition mission statement. Having a clear idea of why you are doing what you do will solidify your habits as your core values ? rather than just abstract thoughts.

17. You will never regret working out once it?s done. You will, however regret skipping it.

18. Set aside 7-10 minutes every morning to prepare food for the day.

19. Hit a grocery store at lunch or on the way home rather than a drive-through.

20. Need a 5 minute grocery store fix? Mixed nuts, beef jerky, flavored tuna (grab a plastic fork too).

21. Moderation: It?s less than you think it is.

22. Enter into and re-commit to your health journey knowing that it won?t be easy

23. Definition of insanity? Doing the same things this year as you did last year and expecting a different result.

24. Work out because you love your body ? not because you hate it.

25. No single food (or category of foods) makes you fat and no single food (or category of foods) will make you thin.

26. Educate yourself: Read, absorb and apply the information to your situation.

27. Do something daily for your posture and mobility. This may be as simple as getting away from your desk more frequently.

28. 2 bad days can ruin 5 good ones: Use your weekends to capitalize on healthy living instead of an excuse to ?let lose?.

29. Learn the difference between ?hunger? and ?appetite?. Hunger is a physiological response placated by eating enough while appetite compels us to eat beyond that point.

30. Comparison is the thief of joy. You are unique and you and you alone should be your only barometer.

31. Vitamin D, fish oil a multivitamin/mineral and protein powder are ?bordering-on-necessary? front line supplements.

32. Write down what you eat. Be specific and honest. Food logging creates instant self-awareness and accountability.

33. Only 10 minutes to train? Pick 6 exercises and superset them with minimal rest in between sets.

34. Treat workouts like work commitments in that they are set in stone. Take this a step further, however and treat your training sessions like ?rewards? for a day of work.

35. Every exercise trend oversells itself. There is a place for zumba, pilates, dance-fitness, P90x, crossfit, etc but no one system is right or better overall for anyone.

36. Attack your weaknesses and challenge yourself until form breaks ? not until you?ve completed an arbitrary amount of reps.

37. Pubmed: It knows more than your guru.

38. Be aware of your posture and how you carry yourself in seated, standing, walking, running or training. Awareness is AT LEAST half the battle.

39. Your true test is not keeping on track when you are motivated and life is smooth but rather keeping at it when life throws you curve balls and you don?t feel motivated.

40. To help organize your eating ? try designating foods on different nights to simplify things; ie. Meatless Monday, chicken on Tuesday, fish on Wednesday, etc?

41. Join a challenge. While getting and keeping fit is a lifestyle with no time-constraints, transformation challenges can provide the right platform to propel you towards your goals.

42. A new body won?t change who you are as a person. It is not a missing link to happiness or fulfillment. It IS, however, capable of many amazing physical and psychological benefits that can make you feel better about whom you already are and what you are capable of.

43. Long-term success often comes down to preventing lapses from turning into full-blown re-lapses. You will slip and stumble. Get back up ? as many times as it takes.

44. Strength training is your front-line intervention for health benefits. Make it your foundational form of exercise.

45. Learn 3-4 good healthy and quick recipes. These can be your go-to meals when in a pinch.

46. Populations have not only subsisted but THRIVED on diets both low in carbs and high in carbs. It is silly to think that there is one eating pattern that is universally superior.

47. If you are capable of moving faster ? DO IT! You will gain more benefit in a shorter period of time.

48. There is no universally-decided-upon definition of ?clean eating.?Strive to eat well most of the time and allow for occasional indulgences and ?dirty? foods. Try not to categorize foods as ?good? and ?bad.?

49. Learn the finer points of some of the more complex lifts (squats, deadlifts, pulls, pushes) ? even if you hire a trainer for a few sessions.

50. Have fun? no matter what your path, learn to be process-oriented rather than product oriented. Enjoy the journey and don?t put much stock in the ?when.?

Community Resource Fair Draws Hundreds of Arlington Families ...

In one morning, Danielle Whetstone browsed low-cost childcare options, chatted with employment agencies, and researched health and wellness programs.

The Arlington mother of two attended the Community Resource Fair on Saturday to learn more about activities and services available in the community.

?I love this,? said Whetstone, who recently completed a degree in social work at the University of Texas at Arlington. ?It?s helpful to have all of these programs under one roof, rather than us having to go out and try to find everything on our own.?

The second annual event, sponsored by Arlington Independent School District, aimed to make Arlington families aware of available community services. Representatives from more than 80 organizations from across North Texas ? including Head Start, Easter Seals, JPS Health and United Way ? were on hand to answer questions and provide information.

Electra Kitchin, AISD coordinator for dropout prevention, said families seek assistance for a variety of reasons, including job loss or financial woes, health problems and special education need.

Help is available, but navigating various aid agencies can be difficult for time-strapped families, said Antrice Newsome, AISD special education coordinator. Schools can help lessen that burden.

?We want parents to know we are looking at the needs of the entire family,? Newsome said. ?We look at the whole child and what they need to be successful.?

Susan Diaz, who attended the fair with her 9-year-old son, Daniel, said she was pleased to learn about the educational assistance available to students and families.

?I was not familiar with most of these organizations,? Diaz said. ?It?s good to know where to turn for help.?

As a working mother and college student, Whetstone said she has relied on organizations such as the YWCA and Head Start to help her children.

?I could not have done everything without the help of the community,? said Whetstone, who attended with her daughters, Zahria, 10, and Trinitee, 9. ?I would love to see more of these fairs and community outreach.?

Internet Article Marketing Insight from a Pro: How to ... - E-junkie.info

Even though many say it's old hat and that search engines like Google don't like it, I still use article marketing quite effectively to market my products (eBooks) and services (SEO writing company) online.

How Effective Has Article Marketing Been for Me

Well, it's kept me on the first page of Google for many keywords relevant to my niches. For example, if you google the phrases "SEO writing"; "what is SEO writing" and "sell eBooks online" (without quotes) ? all keyword phrases that are relevant to my online businesses -- I'm on the first page as of this writing.

Note: Search results change all the time, but I've consistently been on the first three pages of Google for these keyword phrases since 2009-2010. And it's all because article marketing is one of the most consistent weapons in my online marketing arsenal.

What Is Article Marketing?

For those who may be new to internet marketing, article marketing is when you write an article and submit it to article directories so that others can publish it -- for free -- in their newsletter, on their blog / website, in their off-line newspaper, etc.

Why would you give away free content? Because at the bottom of each article is a resource box (ie, "About the Author" section) where you have a link to your website/blog/online store, etc. This drives traffic back to your site.

And, just how much is this traffic worth ? especially if you can parlay it into a first-page listing on Google?

How Much Is a Listing on the First Page of Google Worth?

Apparently, a lot. According to the SeoPledge.com article, How Much Is First Page Google Worth?:

If you able to perform some SEO on your site and move to #10 from #11 you should see a 143% jump in traffic. . . . As you move up the first page, the jumps do get larger.

Where to Submit Articles

As mentioned above, you submit articles to free article directories. There are hundreds of them (just?Google?"article directories" to find a list. FYI, EzineArticles.com is the number one rated article directory on the web. It can be cumbersome to get an article approved there, but it's worth it ? especially if you submit on a regular basis. I've submitted close to 400 articles to this site over the years.

Article Marketing ? The Reason I Sell 5 Figures Worth of eBooks Per Year

I sell four figures worth of eBooks per month (five figures per year). And my number one eBook marketing tactic is article marketing. Now that I've hopefully convinced you of how effective article marketing can be, following are four things you can do to make it effective in 2013 ? and beyond.

4 Effective Article Marketing Strategies for 2013

1. Say Something: As in, write BENEFICIAL information. Article marketing is just another form of content marketing, which means dispensing helpful information to assist web surfers in making an informed buying decision.

Many get frustrated with article marketing; saying it "doesn't work."

Baloney!

It works ? if your article is helpful, meaning you can't just throw together a 300- or 400-word article of generic information that can be found all over the web. That type of info doesn't work; it doesn't move consumers to buy.

But if you invest some time into writing clear, concise, helpful articles to distribute, not only will they generate sales, you'll get greater distribution because prospective publishers will come to rely on the fact that you dispense great info.

2. Write Longer Articles: I remember when an article only had to be 250 words or so to be distributed by article directories. Now, most of them require an article to be at least 400 words. Mine tend to be in the 400 to 600-word range.

FYI, I started my own article marketing directory last year. The link to it is in my bio below; there are tons of samples there.

3. Don't Keyword Stuff: Search engines like Google are moving away from rewarding keyword stuffed content to rewarding what's known as themed SEO content. So, strive for a keyword density of only between 1-2%.

4. Create/Leave a Web Footprint: With Google's emphasis on "Authorship," it's more important than ever to create/leave a footprint on the web. This way, search engines know who you are ? and can reward your content. One of the quickest ways to develop/leave a web footprint is via social media.

So, create and start interacting on social media ? especially the biggies like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus.

I got on the first page of Google recently for a keyword phrase I'd been trying to rank for for at ?least six months (SEO content writing) ? all because I shared a piece of content with that keyword phrase in it via my Google Plus profile. Now, I'm in two spots on the first page of Google for this phrase. Go figure!

Article Marketing: Conclusion

You'll come across a lot of negative stuff about article marketing on the web ? especially since Google's Panda and Penguin updates.

SEO Article Marketing: Over 1,000 Articles Written!

Once I learned how to write SEO content in 2007, I upped my article marketing game because knowing SEO is like having the keys to the online marketing kingdom. I've been using this form of online marketing since 2002, and have written over 1,000 articles to promote my own products and services (and a few thousand more for clients via my SEO writing company's article marketing services).

In short, hands down, article marketing is some of the most effective internet marketing you can do. And the best part of all ? it's free!

COMPUTER CHESS ? Hammer to Nail

(Computer Chess world premiered in the NEXT Section of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. Its next stop is the Berlin International Film Festival. Visit the film?s totally awesome official website to learn more.)

In 1984 Barry Salt, a rather obscure British film theorist, published a book called Film Style And Technology. In the book, Salt did statistical analysis of key films from each major period of film style history. His basic thesis is that film technology shapes style and aesthetics. The most obvious example is how film grammar changed once sound was introduced. The camera became less mobile due to the early microphones and mixers being bulky, which also prevented location shoots. Stories also became dialogue driven and acting became more voice dependent. So each period has a distinctive feel stylistically due to the particular technological advances of that time. Thus, if you want to make a true period film, one that really feels it is of the past, you would have to draw inspiration from more than just the props, haircuts and wardrobe of that period. Recently, watching a film print of Three Days of the Condor, I realized it felt so uniquely ?seventies? because the lenses, film stock, ratio of wide shots to tight, and general editing pace were all unusual compared to modern films. It succeeded as a total immersion into the distant past in a way that modern period films rarely do.

Andrew Bujaski?s Computer Chess was my favorite of the 28 films I saw at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. It is a complete and utter cinematic experience, in large part due to it being shot on the Sony AVC 3260, a ?70s-era tethered video tube camera. The camera first hit the market in the late ?60s and was designed as a lightweight portable camera for both professionals and amateurs. Its shallow focus, low contrast black-and-white image looks at first like modern security camera footage, but the Sony has a zoom lens that allows for a wide variety of framings, which provides a varied depth of field from shot to shot and this is in part what defines its most unique trait. Computer Chess features both tightly composed shots of heads bent over computer screens in a crowded room and long empty shots of a man dancing down a long hotel hallway. The camera itself is tethered to a recording box and then the film?s tech team was also simultaneously digitizing the image. This made the camera extremely bulky and immobile. Consequently, inside crowded rooms, the camera does not glide or dance with the actors like it does in modern films. The shots are often static and frames are often angled in such a way that it feels as if we don?t have unlimited access to these strange characters and their often obtuse arguments. The quality of the image could be called crude by comparison to today?s high resolution, high contrast, hypersensitive focus control cameras, but nevertheless, its unique vibe is both disorientating and transporting.

Bujalski?s film tells the story of a group of cutting edge computer geeks who gather in a Texas hotel for a computer chess tournament in the early 1980s. The team whose computer wins will face off in the final match for the ultimate man vs computer challenge, reminiscent of the actual Garry Kasparov chess challenges. There are an assortment of computer types with weird haircuts and unhip period clothes verbally sparring with each other about tech problems as well as larger esoteric questions regarding their own individual computers idiosyncrasies. Also in the hotel for the weekend is a marriage encounter couples therapy group who sit in a circle attempting to better understand their partners? and their own frustrations.

The couples? open eagerness to engage each other verbally about feelings is in stark contrast to the computer dweebs, who seem to each be stuck in some state of pre-adolescent, pre-verbal bubble. The contrast between these two groups is often mined for hilarious laughs, such as when one of the couples tries to seduce the youngest member of the computer tribe by getting him to ?open up? about his feelings and urges while rubbing his neck.

The dislocation caused by the physical aspects of the production, the weird haircuts, lingo, clothes and the black-and-white imagery transport you to a world that for sure existed but has never really been explored on the big screen with such texture. Unlike other films of this period, Computer Chess doesn?t attempt to evoke warm fuzzy nostalgic feelings of a bygone era; instead, it uses the dislocation generated by the video image to cause us to be hyper-aware of how different the world was in the past from how it is now. Bujalski depicts an innocent computer age when the excitement of technology was driven by a pure pursuit of exploration, rather than the pursuit of application value. At one point a programmer says the future of computers is in dating and we are reminded that there was a time when computer science had yet to be fully co-opted by the corporate consumer driven mentality that currently fuels the dreams of young tech geniuses.

The theme of Man versus Computer is in itself a quaint concept because it was driven by a now dated fear of technology. There were initially fears that computers could be used to create mass destruction or that man?s basic humanity would be somehow compromised by a HAL type computer logic. The film has a sad eve of destruction vibe to it; at times, it reminded me of another Texas indie film, Eagle Pennell?s Last Night At The Alamo, which was also about a group of people getting together for one last night before their world was changed (in this case, the closing of an old tavern). Likewise, Computer Chess depicts life on the cusp before the computers won. Today there are barely any skeptical voices who speak out against the evils of technology. Jaron Lanier?s book You Are Not A Gadget as well as J?rgen Habermas?s screeds against the internet are the lone articulations of this position. Computer Chess, though, is a comedy and it can be simply enjoyed as a nostalgic romp. But if you start to really explore your own insecurities about some of the conflicts that arise throughout the film?s weekend, you may be surprised how deep its tech themes really run. It?s an extremely entertaining low-tech cinematic breakdown of our modern high-tech world.

UK firm in weather satellite deal

British satellite manufacturer SSTL will build the follow-on spacecraft for an innovative weather forecasting system run by Taiwan and the US.

The Cosmic constellation derives information about the atmosphere from the way it disturbs GPS signals.

A clutch of spacecraft currently provide this service, and SSTL has been contracted to provide up to 12 more satellites.

The intention is to launch a new batch in 2016.

"It's a great win for the company, beating off international competition, and it's also a very interesting project," said Alex da Silva Curiel from SSTL.

"It involves operational meteorology, good climate science and ionospheric science," he told BBC News.

The Cosmic project is a joint initiative between the National Space Organization (NSPO) of Taiwan and the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa).

It relies on a smart observation technique known as radio occultation.

This recognises that a transmission from a Global Positioning Satellite, which ordinarily is used to plot a time and a position, will be bent as it passes through air.

The degree to which this refraction occurs is dependent on the properties of the atmosphere at that moment, and can be exploited to pull out information about temperature, pressure and water vapour - key parameters required in weather forecasting.

NSPO/Noaa's Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere & Climate (Cosmic) operates a series of small spacecraft in low orbit to make these observations.

But this satellite series, collectively known as FORMOSAT-3, is beginning to fail and needs replacing.

SSTL, which has a worldwide reputation for manufacturing high-performance, low-cost spacecraft, has now been engaged to build this next generation - FORMOSAT-7.

Futurity.org ? Breast cancer cells roll, stick, and spread

The new study shows that the presence of pro-inflammatory molecules?the cytokines IL-6 and TNF-alpha?enable the malignant, hormone therapy-resistant breast cancer cells used in the study, to adhere to the endothelial wall, leading to metastasis. (Credit: "breast cancer cell" via National Cancer Institute/Wikimedia Commons)

CORNELL (US) ? Inflammation creates a ?positive feedback loop? that encourages breast cancer cells to adhere and metastasize, researchers find.

Cancer is lethal because it spreads, or metastasizes, and curing cancer depends on knowing just how this process works. Biomedical engineers have uncovered a groundbreaking link between the body?s natural inflammatory response, and how malignant breast cancer cells use the bloodstream to metastasize.

The study, which is published online in the journal PLOS ONE, contends that pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in blood called cytokines constitute a ?switch? that induces the mechanism by which breast cancer cells ?roll? and adhere to the blood vessel surface. The cancer cells eventually stick to and infiltrate the vessel.

Michael King, professor of biomedical engineering at Cornell University, is the paper?s senior author. King?s lab members study how cancer cells spread through the bloodstream by interacting with the blood vessel wall, called the endothelium. Cancer cells have small molecules, called ligands, on their surfaces that find specific receptor sites on the endothelium, called selectins.

The ligand-selectin interaction causes the cells to literally ?roll? on the endothelium, slowing down and eventually adhering to the blood vessel, in a process called the metastatic cascade. This mechanism is identical to how white blood cells infiltrate blood vessels to reach the site of inflammation.

Cancer has long been associated with inflammation?the body?s natural defense mechanism?and now the researchers have demonstrated a definitive link. They found that the presence of pro-inflammatory molecules?the cytokines IL-6 and TNF-alpha?enable the malignant, hormone therapy-resistant breast cancer cells used in the study, to adhere to the endothelial wall, leading to metastasis.

Tumor cells first encounter IL-6 and TNF-alpha in the primary tumor?s microenvironment (before the cancer has spread). These cytokines induce proliferation and aggregation of cancer cells, triggering other cancer cells to secrete more cytokines, resulting in a positive feedback loop.

The King lab has developed a flow chamber that mimics inflamed endothelium and has used this to investigate the metastatic cascade on the bench top. In investigating the adhesive behavior of a particularly metastatic cell line, Yue Geng, a Cornell graduate student in biomedical engineering, and colleagues discovered unexpectedly that these cells were unable to interact with selectins?a key step in the metastatic cascade.

The bioengineers went on to design several different cell culture setups to culture cancer cells with human plasma, IL-6 and TNF-alpha to test their hypotheses that inflammatory molecules in blood may induce adhesion capability. All of them promoted breast cancer cell metastatic behavior.

They also used more sophisticated, 3D tumor spheroids, which are more physiologically accurate, to confirm their results. In fact, the 3D spheroid tumor cells exhibited the most significant increase in the interaction between the cancer cells and the blood vessel. They also treated some of the samples with a known anti-inflammatory drug called Metformin, which blocks IL-6, and they found that these samples were not able to metastasize?further underscoring their results.

Improving cancer treatment to fight metastasis via the bloodstream will depend on undoing this roll-and-stick mechanism of cancer cells, Geng says. The research could form the basis for immunotherapies to block the ligand-selectin binding of cancer cells, by first counteracting the inflammatory cytokines that, it seems, set the whole process in motion.

The research was funded by the National Cancer Institute via the Center on the Microenvironment and Metastasis, and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

Libya's upheaval the past two years helped lead to the ongoing conflict in Mali, and now Mali's war threatens to wash back and further hike Libya's instability. Fears are growing that post-Moammar Gadhafi Libya is becoming an incubator of turmoil, with an overflow of weapons and Islamic jihadi militants operating freely, ready for battlefields at home or abroad.

The possibility of a Mali backlash was underlined the past week when several European governments evacuated their citizens from Libya's second largest city, Benghazi, fearing attacks in retaliation for the French-led military assault against al-Qaida-linked extremists in northern Mali.

More worrisome is the possibility that Islamic militants inspired by ? or linked to ? al-Qaida can establish a strong enough foothold in Libya to spread instability across a swath of North Africa where long, porous desert borders have little meaning, governments are weak, and tribal and ethnic networks stretch from country to country. The Associated Press examined the dangers in recent interviews with officials, tribal leaders and jihadis in various parts of Libya.

Already, Libya's turmoil echoes around the region and in the Middle East. The large numbers of weapons brought into Libya or seized from government caches during the 2011 civil war against Gadhafi are now smuggled freely to Mali, Egypt and its Sinai Peninsula, the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and to rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad. Jihadis in Libya are believed to have operational links with fellow militant groups in the same swath, Libyan fighters have joined rebels in Syria and are believed to operate in other countries as well.

Libyan officials, activists and experts are increasingly raising alarm over how Islamic militants have taken advantage of the oil-rich country's weakness to grow in strength. During his more than four-decade rule Gadhafi stripped the country of national institutions, and after his fall the central government has little authority beyond the capital, Tripoli. Militias established to fight Gadhafi remain dominant, and tribes and regions are sharply divided.

In the eastern city of Benghazi, birthplace of the revolt that led to the ouster and killing of Gadhafi, militias espousing an al-Qaida ideology and including veteran fighters are prevalent, even ostensibly serving as security forces on behalf of the government since the police and military are so weak and poorly armed. One such militia, Ansar al-Shariah, is believed to have been behind the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in the city that killed four Americans, including the ambassador. Since then, militants have been blamed for a wave of assassinations of security officers and government officials.

Earlier this month, former Libyan leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil warned the militant threat extends to efforts to establish a state that can enforce rule of law.

"Libya will not see stability except by facing them," he told a gathering videotaped by activists and aired on Libyan TV. "It is time to either hold dialogue or confront them." He listed 30 officials and police officers assassinated in Benghazi the past year.

The Mali drama illustrates how the threat bounces back and forth across the borders drawn in the Sahel, the region stretching across the Sahara Desert. Libya and Mali are separated by Algeria, but the two countries had deep ties under Gadhafi. Thousands of Tuaregs moved from Mali to Libya beginning in the 1970s, and many joined special divisions of Gadhafi's military where they earned higher salaries than they would have at home.

As Gadhafi was falling in 2011, thousands of heavily armed Tuareg fighters in southern Libya fled to northern Mali. The Tuareg are an indigenous ethnic group living throughout the Sahel, from Mali to Chad and into Libya and Algeria.

The fighters, led by commander Mohammed Ag Najem, broke the Mali government's hold over the north and declared their long-held dream of a Tuareg homeland, Azawad. But they in turn were defeated by Islamic militants, some linked to al-Qaida's branch in North Africa, who took over the territory and imposed rule under an extreme version of Shariah, or Islamic law. This month, as militants moved south, France launched its military intervention to rescue the Mali government, conducting airstrikes against militants.

In retaliation, militants seized an oil complex in eastern Algeria, prompting a siege by Algerian forces that killed dozens of Western hostages and militants.

The militant group that carried out the Algeria hostage taking, in turn, had help from Libyan extremists in the form of smuggled weapons and "organizational ties," the group's leader, Moktar Belmoktar said.

"Their ideological and organizational connection to us is not an accusation against a Muslim but a source of pride and honor to us and to them," Belmoktar, the one-eyed Algerian founder of the Masked Brigade, said of the Libyans in an interview with The Mauritanian newspaper in mid-December. "Jihadists in al-Qaida and in general were the biggest beneficiaries of the Arab world uprisings, because these uprisings have broken the chains of fear ... that the agent regimes of the West imposed."

He urged Libyan militants not to submit to calls by the Tripoli government to hand over their weapons, saying their arms are "the source of their dignity and their guarantee of security."

With pressure building on Mali's Islamists, Libya provides a possible alternative haven for jihadis, said Scott Stewart of the global intelligence group Stratfor.

"It is a very good place to operate if you are an extremist," he said. "There are fault lines and divisions ... The central government has very little authority outside Tripoli. This is very conducive environment for Jihad to thrive."

They already have a free rein in Benghazi.

"Libya became a heaven for them," Col. Salah Bouhalqa, a leading military commander in Benghazi, said of al-Qaida. "The Westerners are fearful that what happened in Algeria will take place in Libya. And here, just like Mali and Egypt and Iraq, these groups have extensions."

Some extremists say they are determined to shape the new Libya. Youssef Jihani, a member of Ansar Shariah in Benghazi, vowed that he and other jihadis would not accept a return to the days when they were jailed and executed under Gadhafi's rule. He told the AP in Benghazi late last year that the toppling of Gadhafi would not have been possible without the strength of jihadi fighters who he said joined the uprising to ensure an "Islamic state of Libya, where Shariah rule is implemented."

The bearded young man said he lay down his weapons last year. But he said he would take arms up again if Libya's next constitution doesn't make a clear reference to rule by Islamic law or if secular politicians hold power and try to rein in jihadis.

Jihani proudly said he believes in al-Qaida and supports its slain leader Osama bin Laden and Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar. He said that during Libya's civil war in 2011, he killed a captured soldier from Gadhafi's army after discovering 11 video clips on his mobile phone showing soldiers raping women and men. Jihani said he ordered the soldier to dig his own grave, then severed his head with a knife.

"I wish I could behead him 11 times," he said. His story could not be independently confirmed.

Stewart, of Stratfor, also pointed to a concern that al-Qaida could make inroads among Libya's impoverished and alienated Tuareg.

Living in mud-brick slums or camps in the deserts of southwestern Libya, most Tuaregs were never given citizenship under Gadhafi's rule, though he used their fighters as mercenaries, and now they suffer not only from poverty but from the disdain of Libyans who see them as Gadhafi loyalists.

For centuries, Tuareg ran caravan routes across the Sahara, carrying gold and other valuables. Now they're known for smuggling weapons and drugs. In slums around the towns of Sabha and Owbari, they sleep next to livestock in shacks with corrugated metal roofs, with webs of electric cables dangling from poles overhead and garbage-filled streets.

Libya's new leadership has largely shunned them. The Tuareg's four members in parliament were removed because of ties to Gadhafi's regime, leaving them without a political voice. The Tuareg contend they were exploited by Gadhafi, along with all other Libyans.

"Gadhafi's rule left behind a breeding ground for terrorism by depriving people of their rights and education .... After all the promises, we thought we will live in heaven, but kids here die from scorpion bites," said Suleiman Naaim, a Tuareg rights activist, told the AP in Owbari.

Seven die in Egypt violence on anniversary of uprising

CAIRO/ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Seven people were shot dead in the Egyptian city of Suez during nationwide protests against President Mohamed Mursi on Friday, underlining the country's deep divisions on the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

One of the dead was a policeman, medics said. Another 456 people were injured across Egypt, officials said, in unrest fuelled by anger at Mursi and his Islamist allies over what the protesters see as their betrayal of the revolution.

Mursi said the state would not hesitate in "pursuing the criminals and delivering them to justice". In a statement, he also called on Egyptians to respect the principles of the revolution by expressing their views peacefully.

The January 25 anniversary laid bare the divide between the Islamists and their secular rivals.

The schism is hindering the efforts of Mursi, elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a plunge in Egypt's currency by enticing back investors and tourists.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose that united Egyptians two years ago has given way to internal strife that already triggered bloody street battles last month.

Thousands of opponents of Mursi massed in Cairo's Tahrir Square - the cradle of the revolt against Mubarak - to rekindle the demands of a revolution they say has been hijacked by the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which Mursi emerged.

In Suez, the military deployed armored vehicles to guard state buildings, witnesses and security sources said, as symbols of government were targeted across the country.

Street battles erupted in cities including Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port Said. Arsonists attacked at least two state-owned buildings. An office used by the Muslim Brotherhood's political party was also torched.

"Our revolution is continuing. We reject the domination of any party over this state. We say no to the Brotherhood state," Hamdeen Sabahy, a popular leftist leader, told Reuters.

The Brotherhood decided against mobilizing for the anniversary, wary of the scope for more conflict after December's violence, stoked by Mursi's decision to fast-track an Islamist-tinged constitution rejected by his opponents.

The Brotherhood denies accusations that it is seeking to dominate Egypt, labeling them a smear campaign by its rivals.

DEATH IN SUEZ

There were conflicting accounts of the lethal shooting in Suez. Some witnesses said security forces had opened fire in response to gunfire from masked men.

News of the deaths capped a day of violence that started in the early hours. Before dawn in Cairo, police battled protesters who threw petrol bombs and firecrackers as they approached a wall blocking access to government buildings near Tahrir Square.

Clouds of teargas filled the air. At one point, riot police used one of the incendiaries thrown at them to set ablaze at least two tents erected by youths, a Reuters witness said.

Skirmishes between stone-throwing youths and the police continued in streets around the square into the day. Ambulances ferried away a steady stream of casualties.

Protesters echoed the chants of 2011's historic 18-day uprising. "The people want to bring down the regime," they chanted. "Leave! Leave! Leave!" chanted others as they marched towards the square.

"We are not here to celebrate but to force those in power to submit to the will of the people. Egypt now must never be like Egypt during Mubarak's rule," said Mohamed Fahmy, an activist.

There were similar scenes in Suez and Alexandria, where protesters and riot police clashed near local government offices. Black smoke billowed from tires set ablaze by youths.

In Cairo, police fired teargas to disperse a few dozen protesters trying to remove barbed-wire barriers protecting the presidential palace, witnesses said. A few masked men got as far as the gates before they were beaten back.

Teargas was also fired at protesters who tried to remove metal barriers outside the state television building.

Outside Cairo, protesters broke into the offices of provincial governors in Ismailia and Kafr el-Sheikh in the Nile Delta. A local government building was torched in the Nile Delta city of al-Mahalla al-Kubra.

BADIE CALLS FOR 'PRACTICAL, SERIOUS COMPETITION'

With an eye on parliamentary elections likely to begin in April, the Brotherhood marked the anniversary with a charity drive across the nation. It plans to deliver medical aid to one million people and distribute affordable basic foodstuffs.

Writing in Al-Ahram, Egypt's flagship state-run daily, Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie said the country was in need of "practical, serious competition" to reform the corrupt state left by the Mubarak era.

"The differences of opinion and vision that Egypt is passing through is a characteristic at the core of transitions from dictatorship to democracy, and clearly expresses the variety of Egyptian culture," he wrote.

Mursi's opponents say he and his group are seeking to dominate the post-Mubarak order. They accuse him of showing some of the autocratic impulses of the deposed leader by, for example, driving through the new constitution last month.

"I am taking part in today's marches to reject the warped constitution, the 'Brotherhoodisation' of the state, the attack on the rule of law, and the disregard of the president and his government for the demands for social justice," Amr Hamzawy, a prominent liberal politician, wrote on his Twitter feed.

The Brotherhood says its rivals are failing to respect the rules of the new democracy that put the Islamists in the driving seat via free elections.

Six months into office, Mursi is also being held responsible for an economic crisis caused by two years of turmoil. The Egyptian pound has sunk to record lows against the dollar.

The parties that called for Friday's protests list demands including a complete overhaul of the constitution.

Critics say the constitution, which was approved in a referendum, offers inadequate protection for human rights, grants the president too many privileges and fails to curb the power of a military establishment supreme in the Mubarak era.

Mursi's supporters say enacting the constitution quickly was crucial to restoring stability needed for economic recovery.

Samsung GT-N5110 passes through the FCC, leaves a Galaxy Note 8.0-size hole

Samsung GTN5110 passes through the FCC, matches Galaxy Note 80 rumors

Rumors (recently confirmed by company executives) have suggested Samsung would expand its lineup of stylus-packing mobile devices, and this GT-N5110 that just passed through the FCC fits the profile almost exactly. Sporting only WiFi and Bluetooth radios and described as a "personal tablet" it fits perfectly into the size hole between the existing Galaxy Note II and Galaxy Note 10.1 (check out a comparison of the dimensions after the break.)

The model number is also close to the Exynos 4 Quad powered GT-N5100 observed in benchmarks last month and another page in the document indicates it's sporting a matching 1.6GHz CPU. Looking back further, SamMobile spotted a GT-N5100/GT-N5110 certified for DLNA service back in the fall. The diagram listed in the FCC also seems to confirm recent picture leaks that show a device with a center mounted rear camera that looks more like the hot-selling Note II and less like most larger tablets. Hit the source link to dig through the documents for yourself, or just wait for more information which should be revealed in time for MWC 2013.

How does Fitium work?

The key idea behind Fitium is that there is ?no one size fits all diet?. Our genetics, lifestyle, age, fitness, health and diet mean that the same diet can help someone lose weight, whilst making another gain weight!
Fitium takes a different approach, and seeks to understand how your body works, in order to provide a personalised plan designed to help your body lose weight naturally, and keep it off!

Let?s see how it works:
Understanding why you are gaining weight
fitium review pointsWhen you first sign up, you?ll complete a short 8-minute assessment which help Fitium understand how your body works, and pinpoint areas which are causing you to gain weight.

Your personalised diet plan
fitium review pointsFitium then helps you identify your ideal weight, and creates a personalised plan to help you reach it. Your plan will feature an easy to follow blueprint which includes:

  • How many calories you need to consume
  • Which calories to prioritise
  • Which foods to avoid (including recommended substitutes)
  • Specific recommendations to address your key weight gain factors
  • Tailored advice to help blast your stubborn fat zones

Fitium is not just a diet but a lifestyle

Many diets focus on the symptoms, instead of tackling the root causes of weight gain they offer ?band aid? solutions which tend to be short term, and unsustainable in the long term.

Fitium works differently by first understanding what is causing your weight gain, and by helping you tackle the nutrition, mindset and lifestyle changes you need to not only lose weight, but improve your health for the long term.

Some Customer reviews of Fitium Diet Plan found on the web

Fitium review?Fitium is good if you follow the challenges. To get the most of the site you need to follow the coaching challenges which I found really motivating, especially as I have a tendency to easily get bored.

I lost 3 stones in two months on this plan and actually enjoyed the process. I didn?t have to make drastic changes to my diet, and the suggested meals were tasty and filling. On other diets I have always felt hungry or would get aches and pains in the middle of the day, but with the?Fitium diet plan I sometimes couldn?t finish my plate!

I recommend opting for the three or six month package deal, as it works out much cheaper than the monthly payment option.?

Fitium reviewPerhaps one of the most thrilling aspects of this weight loss dieting program is that you get your own and personalized fitness coach. To be honest, this is something that you will definitely not come across with any other program out there.

Fitium reviewIn fact, as online health sites go, this is one of the best performers we have seen in terms of providing their customers with the capability to shed weight and improve their fitness. The end result is a great looking body, slim and toned figure and a much healthier aspect.
